26 Ohio high schools make WaPo/Newsweek Annual Challenge Index of nation's top publics

The list above shows the Ohio schools, ranked among more than 1200 that made the cut, in rank order. Solon (120), Chagrin (121), Orange (175), Beachwood (486), Bay Village (673) and Westlake (1197) made it from Cuyahoga County.

The Index info is in the Newsweek edition for May 28, 2007 and in the Washington Post, here, here and here. Looks like I’ll have to buy the print edition of Newsweek to really look stuff over, but online, you can reorder the list anyway you want – and that’s how I got the Ohio schools grouped together so nicely. Ah, the Internet.

  1. Maybe I am grasping at straws, but what I loved about this reporter/writer’s analysis is the comment about the school that stereotypically is referred to as bad or underpar, because of State scores; but through his research, he claims the school performs well at preparing students for life and their futures. This is something I feel in my gut about Cleveland Schools…I wish we could do this kind of analysis on them. I also love that we have five school districts in the ‘top’ according to his study. Thank you for pointing this out, I had totally missed the article.

  2. Realizing of course that number of students taking the AP exam is an idiotic way of ranking high schools. So don’t take it too seriously.
