Slacker moms: REJOICE! Food can stay on the floor for 30 seconds!!

Hattip to this post at Cliff Schecter, which links to this article. The conclusion of two biology students at Connecticut College on how long it takes bacteria to contaminate food:

Working under the supervision of assistant professor Anne Bernhard, the two cell-and-molecular biology students experimented with samples of wet food (apple slices) and dry food (Skittles candy); food samples were left on the floor for various intervals, then analyzed for contamination, the college said.

According to Goettsche and Moin, the results of their research showed that people can wait as long as 30 seconds to pick up wet foods and even longer for dry foods.

Another potential finding perhaps: Either rogue bacteria don’t particularly like Skittles or the candies are impervious to their immediate depredations; in the students’ research, nearly five minutes elapsed before Skittles on the floor showed a bacterial presence.

Wow – I have a lot of Skittles in the house too. I wonder how many years they can stay inbetween couch cushions and still be okay…

  1. Interesting theory unless you have cats or a dog, anything that hits the floor here that isn’t snapped up within 30 seconds would constitute a miracle…:-)

  2. I wonder how many years they can stay inbetween couch cushions and still be okay…My own empirical evidence suggests six.

  3. What the researchers on this topic have steadfastly ignored is the antibacterial impact of the added step of “mom’s breath”. If mom blows off the “germs” it’s ok to eat. This is a corallary to “mom spit” which makes all faces clean enough for Auntie to kiss and “mom kisses” which heal all boo boos.
