The board voted 3 to 1 [to make Platten exec dir. of the Board of Elections]. Board members Inajo Davis Chappell, Eben “Sandy” McNair and Rob Frost voted for Platten. Interim chair Jeff Hasting dissented.
Hasting said later that while he thought Platten would do an excellent job, his choice would have been Bill Denihan, director of the Cuyahoga County Mental Health Board. Platten and Denihan both were finalists recommended to the board by a search committee.
Hasting also was voted to chair the board. Under state law the chairman and director need to be of opposite parties. Platten is a Democrat. Hasting a Republican.
Denihan has held a plethora of positions in the county, but that cuts both ways. Platten has gotten kudos for the work she’s done, but she’s been there, done that.
Was there really no one else who would have been an even fresher face? Just asking.
Good luck to Ms. Platten. Frankly, it’s one of those jobs that makes me think, who on Earth would actualy want it, right now anyway?
